Folks who grow up on the street in modern times usually get a serviceable grasp of numbers and currency even if they don't stay in school long enough to learn reading. I worked with plenty of them for years in the 2000s as a social worker, ran a charity clothing closet, housing program, meals program, and the like. It's more believable that crippling social anxiety and other behavioral issues might keep him from exercising that knowledge. Good work crafting an enjoyable story, though.
