Some meds really need to be pushed slowly (3-5 min) like iv furosemide/lasix - it can be ototoxic if pushed too fast. There are a bunch of other drugs that can cause dysrhythmias if pushed too fast as well. I find that many nurses just push however they want without regard to potentially adverse reactions.
